Myofascial release is a therapeutic approach that works directly with the fascial system, the three-dimensional web of connective tissue running through every structure in your body. Fascia surrounds your muscles, bones, nerves, and organs without interruption. When it is restricted, from injury, chronic postural strain, surgery, or accumulated stress, it applies compressive force to everything around it, creating pain, limiting movement, and producing dysfunction that standard massage does not reach.
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release uses sustained, low-load pressure held for 90 seconds or more to release those restrictions. It is not a harder version of a regular massage. It targets a different layer of tissue, through a different technique, to address the root cause of restriction rather than managing symptoms at the surface.

Deep tissue massage applies focused compression to reach the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Myofascial release applies sustained, low-load pressure to the fascial system, the connective tissue that surrounds muscle rather than the muscle itself.
The pressure in myofascial release is often lighter than deep tissue, but the duration is longer, and the target tissue is different. Many clients find that myofascial release reaches restrictions that years of deep tissue massage have not fully resolved, because the two approaches work with different structures.

Your first session begins with a conversation. Tai will ask about your history, what you are experiencing, what you have tried, and what you are hoping to address. She palpates the tissue before beginning significant work to identify where restriction actually lives, which is frequently not the same location as your reported pain.
The session itself is quieter and slower than a standard massage. Pressure is often lighter than expected. You may feel warmth, a sense of something softening, or involuntary movement as restricted tissue begins to release. Some clients feel a significant change during the session. Others notice the effects more fully in the 24 to 48 hours following. Both are normal.
-
It should not. The pressure is often considerably lighter than clients expect. There can be a sensation of productive engagement as a restriction is addressed, similar to a deep stretch reaching its limit, but the goal is never pain. Pain causes guarding, and guarding is counterproductive in fascial work because it causes the tissue to contract rather than release. Tai communicates throughout the session and adjusts based on your feedback.
-
This depends on how long the restriction has been present and how your body responds. Most people notice some shift after the first session. Sustained resolution of chronic patterns typically requires a series of sessions. Conditions that have built over years generally need more sessions than recent onset pain. Tai will give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your specific situation after the first appointment.

No. The Refreshing Effects Session is the right starting point for most new clients, regardless of their specific concern. You tell Tai what is happening in your body. She determines the approach, drawing from JFB Myofascial Release, lymphatic drainage, deep tissue work, reflexology, and cupping as needed. You do not need to know which modality is appropriate for your situation. That is her clinical judgment to make.
-
For clients managing active chronic pain or a specific condition, weekly sessions in the early phase of treatment produce the most meaningful cumulative improvement. As the condition stabilizes, most clients transition to bi-weekly or monthly maintenance.
For general clinical maintenance and preventive care, monthly sessions are a realistic and effective baseline. The right frequency for your specific situation is something Tai will discuss after your first session, based on what she finds and how your body responds.

Lymphatic drainage massage is a clinical technique that uses light, rhythmic, directional pressure to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the body's vessels and nodes. It supports immune function, reduces swelling, and facilitates detoxification.
It is specifically indicated for clients managing lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, chronic immune challenges, fibromyalgia, and systemic inflammation. It is not a general relaxation service. If you are unsure whether it is appropriate for your situation, book a Refreshing Effects Session first, and Tai will advise after the session.

Yes, when provided by a certified practitioner with specific training in perinatal massage. Tai holds her Nurturing the Mother™ certification through Claire Marie Miller Seminars and works with clients in their second and third trimester. First trimester clients should contact Tai directly before booking to discuss appropriateness for their specific situation.
Prenatal massage at Refreshing Effects is clinical perinatal work, not a standard massage with modified positioning.
