The Refreshing Effects Signature Session
Clinical massage therapy in Harrisonburg, Virginia, built in real time around what your body needs today.
The Signature Session is the primary therapeutic service at Refreshing Effects. Most new clients book here first. Each session integrates John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, clinical deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, and cupping therapy, chosen in the moment by Tai Blakey, BCTMB, based on what your body presents that day.
You do not need to arrive knowing what kind of work you need. You need to arrive knowing what is happening in your body, where it hurts, what is not moving, and what you have tried that has not worked. Tai handles the rest.
Drawing from 20+ years of clinical training, this is therapeutic work designed to produce a result: reduced pain, restored movement, and resolved tension that has been building for months or years.
What is the Refreshing Effects Signature Session?
The Refreshing Effects Session
The Signature Session is a customized clinical massage therapy session offered at Refreshing Effects in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Rather than choosing a single modality in advance, the session is built in real time using whichever combination of myofascial release, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, and cupping best addresses what your body presents on the day of the appointment. Sessions are available in 30-minute, 60-minute, and 90-minute lengths.
How does a Signature Session work?
Every session follows The Refresh Method, a three-phase clinical structure.
Assess. The session begins with a focused clinical intake. What hurts, where, when it started, and what you have tried. If you are returning, what has changed since your last visit.
Release. Hands-on therapeutic work begins. The modality is chosen in the moment based on what your body is showing. Sometimes that means slow, sustained myofascial holds. Sometimes it means cupping over a stuck area, deep tissue along a chain of restriction, or lymphatic work for tissue that is swollen or inflamed. The choice is clinical, not formulaic.
Restore. The session closes with integration and aftercare. You leave with a clear understanding of what was found, what was treated, and what to do between visits, including any movement, hydration, or self-care that will hold the result longer.
30 Minutes - $50 | 60 Minutes - $100 | 90 minutes- $130
Cupping therapy add-on: $25 per session.
Memberships and 5-session packages are available at member rates. See Memberships and Packages for current options.
What modalities are used in a Signature Session?
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release
A sustained, light-pressure technique that releases fascial restrictions underneath chronic pain and limited movement. Most useful for tension that has been present for years. Tai has trained directly in the John F. Barnes approach, which is distinct from general myofascial work taught in entry-level massage programs.
Targeted work into specific muscles and chains of restriction. Slower and more precise than general deep tissue, with the goal of resolving the cause rather than chasing the symptom.
Gentle, rhythmic work that supports the body's drainage and immune systems. Used for swelling, post-surgical recovery, inflammation, and systemic fatigue. Available as part of a Signature Session, or as a dedicated 60-minute Lymphatic Drainage Session when a full protocol is indicated.
Reflexology
Pressure-point work on the feet, hands, or ears, used to influence the nervous system and address systemic patterns.
Negative-pressure tools that lift and separate tissue, reaching layers that hands alone cannot access. Available as a $25 add-on to any session length.
Who is the Signature Session for?
The Signature Session is appropriate for adults seeking clinical bodywork in the Harrisonburg, Virginia area for:
Chronic pain
Fascial restriction
Limited mobility
Injury recovery
Post-surgical recovery
Clinical maintenance between flare-ups
Tension that has not resolved with general massage, stretching, or other approaches
How is this different from a regular massage?
A regular massage typically uses one modality, Swedish or general deep tissue, applied across the whole body in a predetermined pattern. The Signature Session is built around a clinical assessment of what your body presents that day, and uses whichever combination of modalities best addresses the findings. The goal is a measurable result, not a fixed routine.
“Tai is able to make me relax, but also works through injuries that are not just muscular. Look forward to going every month!”

Questions before getting started? Learn more:
-
No. The Signature Session is built in real time around what your body presents. Bring what you know about your symptoms; the modality choice is part of Tai's clinical work.
-
The Signature Session is therapeutic clinical work focused on a specific outcome: reduced pain, restored movement, or resolved tension. It is not a relaxation service.
-
Most new clients book a 60-minute session for a single concern, or 90 minutes when there is more than one area to address or a longstanding pattern. The 30-minute option is best for focused maintenance work on a specific area.
